Paint Splatter

This one is going to be pretty straight forward; but I will guide you through my process in as detailed a manner as possible. First gather your materials….

  • Watercolors and/or Acrylics
  • Canvas or paper or really whatever you want paint on
  • A brush. Just any brush….whatever brush you’re thinking of yes.
  • Water
  • A towel (to prevent wall and floor stains from paint)
Using my Dr. Ph Martin Watercolors – seriously these rock.

Set up your canvas up in front of you. Take your brush and wet it. Select a watercolor and soak your brush in it. Next just flick it at the canvas. Throw it. Pretend you’re playing the drums with your brush soaked in paint. It should start looking like this.

Obviously staged picture is obvious.

I used colors in layers, doing large splatters of one color before moving on to the next. Then I would go back over with colors in no particular order as I felt was needed. This kind of painting is really fun to do while listening to some hype music. I was jamming to some hard rock, pretending I was sword fighting. I really let myself get lost in the fun of throwing paint at the canvas.

Progress update: more paint was thrown at the canvas. 10/10.

At a certain point I got bored using just primary colors. I love my watercolors but I don’t have the fun and unusual colors I really enjoy. I decided to switch to acrylic paint because, humble brag, I have a 48 color paint set. Pretty fancy, right? I feel like the cool kindergartner that has the biggest pack of crayons. Anyways, you’ll need to water down the acrylic paint to effectively splatter it. So just literally add a little water to a dollop of acrylic paint and you’re set.

Acrylic paint, a brush, and a towel, and a paint tray. Nice. Just add water and splatter away.

And last but not least, HAVE FUN.
